The work on Damanganga bridge linking Nani Daman with Moti Daman in the Union Territory of Daman will commence soon.
SURAT/GANDHINAGAR: The work on Damanganga bridge linking Nani Daman with Moti Daman in the Union Territory of Daman will commence soon, as the new contract for the construction of Rs 34-crore bridge has been entrusted to the state roads and buildings department. Reliable sources in the state government said that a tender submitted by a private firm has been approved by a team of engineers of roads and buildings department after scrutiny of the technical aspects of the one km long bridge across Damanganga river.
The construction work of the bridge was earlier handed over to Uttar Pradesh Bridge construction corporation but the contract was terminated following violation of the terms and conditions by the company owned by Uttar Pradesh government. Sources from the state roads and buildings department said that the bridge will now be constructed under supervision of the R & B department which has already finalised a tender of the Gujarat based private company.
As per the agreement reached between the state R&B department and the private contractor, the construction work of the Damanganga bridge will be completed within two years. At present, the people living in Daman have to shuttle between Nani Daman and Moti Daman through a longer route causing great inconvenience to the residents. The old bridge built across the Damanganga had collapsed on August 3,2004 following heavy rains in South Gujarat region and at least 30 school children had drowned in the river as the school bus carrying them fell into the river." The tender for the construction of the bridge has been approved and the work would now start at the earliest" said a senior R&B official.
